Paint it Black
Today I wanted to talk about Black Paint. It is a colour that we have used in many areas of our home.
Have you used Black paint in your home?
Don’t let its dark and dreary reputation fool you: Black paint has the same enduring versatility as its lighter counterparts—not to mention it can give a space a dramatic edge. And applied within the right layout, a few fresh coats can make a space appear bright, airy, and shockingly spacious, making it a great choice for kitchens, powder rooms, outdoor kitchens, and anywhere else that could use a little oomph!
Selecting the right shade for a project is a decision that should not be taken lightly. But as the saying goes, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder—and black paint is no exception.
A month ago we revealed our outdoor kitchen. When I first started planning it, there were really only two options that came to mind. Black or White. Both fitting and seamless with the surroundings of our white home and green back drop. However, although white could have worked, it could easily have felt washed out and a bit dull! Black, like I was saying above, can define a space and give the the space an edge it needs. Also, lets face it, its smart and stylish when done right.
The Black paint we used for the BBQ area is Taubmans, Ace of Spades
Below are two examples of how we have used black to make the shed and cubby house seamless. It is remarkable how you can use black to define a space and yet have it sit effortlessly in the garden surrounded by greenery.

We also used Ace of spades for the cubby area too.
Below, inside our home we have utilised Black paint to make Teddy’s room feel more spacious!
In order to create a feeling of openness and airiness, I decided to incorporate black paint into the room. Surprisingly, this unconventional choice worked wonders in making Teddy's room appear larger than its actual size.
One of the key elements we introduced was wall paneling. This feature not only added visual interest to the room but also played a crucial role in creating the illusion of expanded space. By painting it black, it encourages the eye to move upwards, beyond the panels, towards the captivating wallpaper, making the room feel more expansive.
In addition to the strategic use of paint and wall treatments, I incorporated simple furnishing tricks to further enhance the perception of space. For example, I painted Teddy's drawers in the same colour as the panels for a monochromatic feel, encouraging your eye to move seamlessly through the space. I also strategically positioned a mirror on the wall farthest from the door. This placement allowed the mirror to capture and reflect the opposite side of the room, creating a visual illusion that the bedroom extends beyond its physical boundaries.
Below are the before and afters of Teddys bedroom, with cot and big boy bed! The black paint we used in his room is porters paints, Black cockatoo.
As you can see, we love to incorporate black paint into our home for different reasons in design. If you have been thinking of doing it, don’t hold back!
