Making Habits and Living Lighter

I’m always striving for ways to live with a little more intention, less chaos and more calm. And one of the ways I do this, and love to teach, is living lighter!

Living lighter and more intentionally in your home can promote a healthier, more mindful, and purposeful lifestyle. It not only creates a comfortable and happier home but also can positively influence various aspects of well-being, from mental and emotional health and intentional living.

Here are 8 benefits of ‘living lighter’:

  • Reduced Stress and Anxiety

  • Improved mental health

  • Sustainable living

  • Better physical Health

  • Increased focus and productivity

  • Quality over quantity

  • Improved sleep

  • Emotional freedom

Sounds pretty good doesn’t it! So where do we even start to begin ‘living lighter’? Well, once you know how you want to live and thrive in your home and what matters most to you, you begin making positive habits.

Habits are powerful tools! Tools that can  positively impact your efficiency, consistency, goal achievement, time management, mental health, discipline, AND overall well-being. By consciously developing and maintaining positive habits, you can create a foundation for a more fulfilling and successful life. In other words, less chaos and more calm.

“Start off by making your bed. If you can't do the little things right, you will never do the big things right. And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made—that you made—and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” Admiral William H. McRaven

Having grasped the fundamental significance of living lighter and cultivating habits, the initial stride towards realising these principles involves identifying your core values and what matters to you most. Getting to the root cause of why you want to live lighter is key in this process. Whether your aim is to alleviate stress and chaos, shed emotional baggage with possessions or past, or encourage a more serene environment at home and in your overall lifestyle, knowing these reasons helps you smoothly take the next steps and reinforce them with habits.

Think about what you want in life and who you are. But go deeper to understand your values, priorities, and goals – these will guide you in this process and keep you motivated. To make it easier, be clear about your intention. Why do you want to make a change in your life? What do you want to achieve? For instance, my answer is ‘create a home that flows and feels calm, which will enhance peace and purpose in the day-to-day so I can be more present with what matters most.’ You can see my main reason here is peace, calm and to be present, which will enhance my mood!

Everyone’s reason for taking action and being motivated will vary, it is about finding what fills up your cup and what your vision and goal is for your home and life. The most thorough way to do this is write your values, priorities, goals, and intentions down on paper and put in the critical steps to make it happen and turn them into habits.

It’s always helpful to ask yourself some questions. Here are a few to get started:

  • What motivates your desire to live lighter and thrive?

  • Are you aiming to save time, money, energy, or alleviate feelings of overwhelm, anguish, and frustration?

  • What is the root course holding you back from living lighter?

  • How do you anticipate your life changing or improving after successfully and intentionally living lighter?

Once you have clear intention with who you are, where you want to be and your crystal-clear goal, let’s begin the fun and journey of longevity to living lighter.
