Organisation

I’ve always been an organiser, it helps me stay disciplined, structured and mindful. As I declutter my house it truely helps me declutter my mind! It also teaches my kids about what we do and don’t need, which is ultimately more cost effective as well. Organised spaces help us live more intentional.

Top Tips

When organising I find it helpful to prioritise a zone or tackle the organising systematically, room by room, drawer by drawer ect. Having a system means that there is less overwhelm. Whatever zone you are working within, wether it be kids toys, the closet or the bathroom cabinet; here is my 3 step rule for general organisation:

  1. Grab a bin liner and get rid of all the rubbish first — you know, like old toothpaste that’s been in your drawer empty for weeks etc.)

  2. Categorise into 3 separate piles: Keep/Donate/Recycle — tip: if you haven’t used something in over 6 months, chances are you aren’t going to use it.

  3. BE PRACTICAL — prioritise what you use the most and keep it within easy access.

So, what do I mean by Keep/Donate/Recycle?

Keep

Keep what you use, still love and need, it’s that easy! If you haven’t used it in over 6 months, you’re most likely not going to use it now, so let go of what you don’t need and KEEP the things you do. Want to know how I manage all my clothes? Donate

I donate items that are no longer in use but are still intact, for example: clothes that Florence has grown out of or toys that they no longer play with but can be used and loved by someone else. My favourite places to donate items are local charities, the Children’s Hospital, Vinnies, Salvation Army etc.

Recycle

I love being resourceful, so I’ll always try to find a way to reuse before I recycle — for example: taking old t-shirts and cutting them up to be used as cleaning rags etc. If that’s not possible because the item simply can’t be used again, for example: an incomplete kids puzzle set, then I recycle it.

Organised spaces for the kids are particularly important to us. I encourage play based learning and make part of playing and packing away the toys part of an activity for them. My top tip for organising with kids is storage baskets! Baskets with themes for easy and mindful play, it’s quick to pack away and doesn’t feel like our home is overrun with kiddie items! (Particularly in a small home like ours)

Having a place for everything is key to maintaining organisation and keeping on top of clutter and what one really needs and uses.

Have fun organising!!
