The Laundry
This was the first ever renovation project that we documented and shared on Hutchinson House. Original 1950’s outdoor laundry room. We updated it to make it more functional for us as a growing family.
It is quite a small space, only 2.8m x 2.8m so we wanted to ensure the design was practical, clean and fresh. I also like to design and style the space how I want to feel within it. Seeing as laundry is part of our daily life, especially with a young family, I wanted to make sure that I would feel calm and productive when I was in that space. The fresh white walls paired with the soft green on the cabinets (Gentle Calm by Dulux) creates a feeling of serenity in the space, whilst the design of the bench top/sink, dual washer and dryer, shelving and hanging rail is just so practical that you can’t help but be productive.
I also love adding a pop of colour to add visual interest and using natural elements, raw woods, natural textures, brass fittings to to reflect our beach environment.

Before & After
This is how we updated our laundry:
Added shiplap to the walls to add definition to the space.
Sanded the floors and whitewashed (Feast Watson — Liming White x4 coats).
Transformed the area from a dark and dingy space to a light and bright space.
Maximised the size of the space by investing in a dual washer and dryer.
Invested in custom cabinetry maximising the functionality of the space. We also keep all our cleaning products tucked away in the cupboards, you can read more here about what products we use and why we are so obsessed with them!
Chose to add the custom made hanging rail for functionality and design aesthetic.
Created and installed new open shelving using pine.
Updated the open shelving with baskets — it opens up the space and it means we have to only keep what we really need/use, forcing us into living intentionally. Storage baskets are great for storage and aesthetic.
